Hormonal changes and imbalances are one of the main causes of adolescent acne, and this is true no matter where the acne is. However, in the case of back acne, the acne itself is aggravated and the condition worsened often because of sweating and tight clothing that does not allow the skin to breathe freely. Back acne can often follow a teen into adulthood, unless it is treated promptly. Acne is not limited to the face and the back either, but it can spread to shoulders, necks, chests and even down to the buttocks. It looks unseemly and it can also cause severe scarring later on if not taken care of.

First of all, with back acne, current outbreaks need to be cleared up. Then, remedial treatment aimed at stopping further outbreaks is given. Normally, for facial acne, creams and lotions are applied however this is not an easy task when the acne covers the back. Thus, for people with back acne it is usually more beneficial to use a body wash that includes salicylic acid. Treatment should include washing with that body wash at least twice a day, making sure that the back area is thoroughly covered.  Showering should also take place after exercise, or any time that the person begins perspiring, in order to keep the back area free of perspiration. Clothes that are sweaty should be changed often too.

Additional back acne home remedies can include using benzoyl peroxide pads, and using other antibacterial products on the back. For severe cases you will most likely need to visit a doctor and purchase prescription washes, creams and antibiotic cream.  Sometimes oral antibiotics also need to be taken, at least initially in order to clear the bacteria that causes the acne from the body.

Of course, there are also other treatments that can help clear up bad back acne, such as phototherapy treatments. These are particularly useful because they are able to treat a large expanse of skin at one time. If you suffer from severe back acne, do not despair; it can be treated but you should probably consult with your local skin doctor to find what treatment would be best for you.
